International Agencies Launch 50% Global Fuel Economy Plan to Key Industry Players at Geneva Motor Show

A road map towards greater global fuel economy that would cut greenhouse gas emissions from cars in half must be embarked upon immediately, and integrated into financial support for the car industry, this according to The '50 by 50' Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) joint international agency report.

The GFEI report shows how annual savings of six billion barrels of oil and 2 gigatons of CO2, which is equivalent to half the total current annual emissions of the EU, are achievable through an ambitious world wide program. It draws a plan to a reduce fuel consumption per kilometer of 50% by 2050, which is in line with suggestions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The report also shows that world wide, the car fleet is set to triple by 2050, with serious implications for the global effort to address climate change unless reducing transportation emissions and improving fuel economy becomes an urgent global priority.

  • What's "Your View" on the U.S. Small Business Administration Allowing Ineligible Companies to Collect Millions?

In this week's IFV News Webreport, the Top Story highlighted the findings of a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. The GAO report indicates that the SBA failed to verify required paperwork or perform audits regarding its 12-year-old Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program. The HUBZone was established to help small businesses in distressed areas.

What do you think of the GAO report and the SBA's practices? We'd like to hear "Your View".

    By Marcella Palmer

    Wednesday, April 1, 2009

After months of waiting and wondering when, the small business community may soon have its chief, as the United States Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship moves to appoint a new head of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Today the Committee is conducting the confirmation hearing of Karen Gordon Mills. The hearing will be available through a live stream on the committee website at 10:00am at http://sbc.senate.gov/hearings/20090401.cfm.

The mentioned yet not so widely covered confirmation hearing this morning comes on the heels of negative SBA news. A new Government Accountability Office report charges that it found sweeping accounts of fraud in an SBA HUBZone program designed to help small businesses in underprivileged areas secure federal contracts. There’s also fresh criticism regarding President Obama’s two-week-old government plan to spend $15 billion to precipitate lending for small businesses. Reportedly, major providers of these types of loans say the plan design is flawed and will not work. Mills herself has come under scrutiny since being appointed by President Obama in January for being a Wall Street insider, for her work as a private equity and venture capitalist.

Today from noon to 1 p.m. at http://www.sbtv.com/SpecialPrograms/AmexOpenForum/, small business owners can constructively sound off or show support for the SBA and Mills, during a real-time online forum about the SBA hosted by American Express Open. “Insights from OPEN Forum: A Roadmap for the New SBA” is the first in a series of small business panel discussions. Today’s forum will connect small business owners, the general public and experts to discuss how Mills and the Obama administration can help small businesses during this recessionary period, as well as programs, which are in place to help.
